Baer Colloquium
May 24, 2014 — Ghent, Belgium

Organizers: T. De Medts and H. Van Maldeghem

Location: Krijgslaan 281, campus "De Sterre", building S22, lectures in room "Emmy Noether"

Schedule of Talks

Saturday, May 24, 2014
10:00h - 10:30h Coffee and tea
10:30h - 11:30h Dieter Betten  (Kiel)
Topological parallelisms of \( \,\mathrm{PG}_3(\mathbb{R}) \)

The classical parallelism is the Clifford parallelism. In Res. Math. 2005 we gave the first non-classical parallelisms, and after this we found various construction methods and many examples. The collineation group of each topological parallelism is a Lie group and we use this Lie group (A) to study the known examples and (B) to start the classification of topological parallelisms.

11:30h - 12:00h Coffee break
12:00h - 13:00h Felix Rehren  (Birmingham)
Nonassociative algebras from idempotents

We will give an introduction to axial algebras, a class of nonassociative algebras controlled by fusion rules for eigenvectors of idempotents. Axial algebras link topics in finite group theory and mathematical physics. We will present connections to Fischer spaces and lattices.

13:00h - 14:30h Lunch break
14:30h - 15:30h Koen Struyve  (Gent)
Characterizations of Veroneseans of arbitrary degree

We characterize \( d \)-uple Veronese embeddings of finite-dimensional projective spaces. The easiest non-trivial instance of our theorem is the embedding of the projective plane in 5-dimensional projective space, a result obtained in 1901 by Severi when the underlying field is complex. (This is joint work with Jeroen Schillewaert.)

15:30h - 16:00h Coffee break
16:00h - 17:00h Martin W. Liebeck  (London)
Word maps on finite groups

A word map on a group \( G \) is a map sending \( (g_1,\dots,g_k) \) to \( w(g_1,\dots,g_k) \), where \( w \) is a fixed word in \( k \) variables. For example, the commutator map and power maps are word maps. I shall discuss various questions about word maps, such as surjectivity and distribution of values, with particular emphasis on simple groups.

Registration

We would appreciate if you would register before May 17, by simply entering your name below, and the number of people who will come with you (including yourself). This information will only be used to give us an idea about how much sandwiches we have to provide for lunch (which is free!).

The organizers are happy to pay for accommodation for young researchers (younger than 30 years old) for at most two nights and make the corresponding reservations. If you are interested, please contact one of the organizers before May 10.

Getting around in Ghent

In case you plan to arrive on Friday, this list of hotels might help you. If you are interested to visit Ghent (which is a beautiful historical city, voted "most pleasant city of Flanders" in 2005), the website www.visitgent.be is a good starting point to find more information.

This map might help you to find the precise location of the department of mathemematics, where the event will take place. It can easily be reached by train (15 minute walk from the main station) or by highway (E17 or E40).

More information

If you need more information, you can contact one of the organizers, by sending an email message to tdemedts@cage.ugent.be  or  hvm@cage.ugent.be.
